OneID is a UK government-certified identity service. Instead of a document or a card reader, it verifies someone by asking their bank to confirm who they are, using the online or mobile banking login they already have. There's nothing to install: the user approves the request with their own bank, and OneID passes the verified identity data back over OpenID Connect.
Because most UK adults already bank online, this bank-verified route gives near-instant, document-free identity checks to the vast majority of the adult population. For anyone outside that group, or where a check needs to be document-backed, OneID also offers ID Scan: the user scans an identity document instead. ID Scan covers documents from a wide range of countries, and for UK and Irish citizens specifically it accepts British and Irish passports and the Irish Passport Card. Both routes run entirely in the browser, with no app download required even for the document scan.
OneID is commonly used for higher-stakes onboarding and contract flows: employment agreements, loan and consumer credit agreements, automotive financing and leasing contracts, particularly across banking, financial services, insurance, real estate and automotive.
In eID Hub, OneID is the provider oneID and supports authentication only.
